William Christenberry: Kodachromes

American photographer William Christenberry is also an abstract expressionist painter. While he is best known for his work with vintage large format cameras, this is a lesser-known collection of his life's work on 35mm Kodachrome slide film.
Inspired by Walker Evans, he photographed his hometown in rural Alabama in the American South every summer for 43 years, from 1964 to 2007. A collector of billboards, the old signs and ruins he saw made his eyes see that the relationship between man and the land had already ended. Are they symbolizing a side of "America" that we do not know? This is not mere nostalgia, but his belief that he has been facing his hometown for decades brings to light a community that continues to depopulate, making this book historically valuable.

抽象表現主義の画家でもある、アメリカ人写真家ウィリアム・クリステンベリー。ヴィンテージの大判カメラによる作品が有名であるが、本作はあまり知られていない、彼のライフワークである35mmのコダクローム・スライドフィルムを使用した作品集。
ウォーカー・エヴァンスに影響を受けた彼は1964年から2007年の43年間にかけて、毎年夏に彼の故郷であるアメリカ南部の田舎、アラバマ州を撮影した。看板コレクターでもある彼が目にした古びた看板や廃墟は、人間とその土地の関係性がすでに終わっていることを目に焼き付けさせる。それらが象徴するのは、我々の知らない「アメリカ」の一面なのだろうか。単なるノスタルジーではない、故郷に数十年向き合い続けた彼の信念が、過疎化が続く地域社会を浮かび上がらせる、歴史的にも貴重な一冊。
